The Cochise Conservation and Recharge Network: How it Helps the San Pedro River
The San Pedro River and its ribbon of green are critically important for resident and migrating birds alike. Balancing human water uses with the protection of river flows is challenging during long term drought. The Nature Conservancy, along with regional partners such as the Cities of Sierra Vista and Bisbee, Cochise County, and the Hereford Natural Resource Conservation District, have implemented projects—collectively called the Cochise Conservation and Recharge Network—designed to work together to help sustain San Pedro River flows and the groundwater that the local communities and the river depend on. Join us to learn more about this innovative approach to groundwater management and how it connects to rivers and habitat.

About the speakers:

Holly Richter is the Arizona Water Projects Director for The Nature Conservancy. She oversees the design and development of water projects that help sustain river flows along the San Pedro River, Verde River, and the Colorado River/Delta in Mexico. One area of focus for her work is the development of a regional aquifer replenishment network, consisting of recharge projects along the Upper San Pedro River to increase groundwater storage and baseflows within the San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area.

Scott Deeny is The Nature Conservancy's Water Program Lead, supervising the Conservancy’s Water Projects within Arizona and serving as the Conservancy’s policy voice on water issues statewide. In that capacity, Scott synthesizes priority strategies, promotes the Water Program’s vision, and serves on State level water policy and augmentation committees. Prior to joining the Conservancy, Scott was a trial attorney for 16 years, and a water rights specialist for 13 of those years, representing a wide variety of clients on complex water and water rights issues.
